Hi. Welcome to my Santa Rosa Junior College faculty web page. My name is Kathleen Roth, but I prefer to be called Kathy. Here is a little bit about me. I am an older person now, so my life is not as physically active as it used to be, but I really enjoy my life. As you know, I teach English as a Second Language as my profession. I also have various other pastimes and interests, some of which I will share with you.
I first taught English in Japan in 1986 and 1987. In 1994 I started teaching again in the United States. One reason why I enjoy teaching English so much is that my students are interesting. I teach adults from many ways of life and from many countries. We have a lot of fun. Another reason I like teaching English is that I enjoy playing with language. English is my job, but it is also my hobby.
I have other hobbies, too. I have pets, including a black and white male half-feral cat, a yellow canary who sings beautiful songs, and a tortoise who loves to sunbathe. In addition to my pets, I really enjoy working with plants outside in the yard or in the house. When I was young, I owned and operated a small houseplant shop. It was really fun. Now, I work with plants just for a hobby. Another of my hobbies is making olive oil soap.
In addition to my hobbies, I spend a lot of time reading. I especially like nonfiction, such as biographies, humorous stories, and science news articles in "Scientific American" and "Discover" magazines. I also read history stories and mystery novels and sometimes try to read stories in Spanish.
Now you know a little about me. If you would like to, you can e-mail me at kroth@santarosa.edu and let me know something about yourself. Regards, Kathy
