Middle School Journalism Course and Publication Production
My academic and professional journey began in journalism, and evolved towards philosophy and English, all of which are represented within my commitment to cross-disciplinary endeavors and service learning. My master’s degrees in English literature and online teaching and learning, and graduate certificates in teaching college composition, reading, and adult learning theory have enhanced my ability to be an effective instructor to the diverse student population served within community colleges. Throughout my thirteen years of teaching at three community colleges in Northern California, including my current position as a tenured instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College, I have taught a range of developmental and college-level English courses, including composition, reading, news media, and literature. I also have training and experience in teaching online, hybrid, compressed, and accelerated courses.
Within my student-centered classes, I assist students in navigating, locating, and utilizing language to learn more about themselves and our society. My aim is to be inclusive of, and increase tolerance for, the diversity within our population. Beyond that, I aim to show students that language is a powerful resource used to create and change our individual and collective opportunities and realities.
My course philosophies and materials are in many ways an extension of my experiences. In addition to living and working in Bangladesh, I have lived and attended school in Syria and traveled through Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, which has led me to a heightened awareness of and response to the various ways of learning I must address within each class I teach. Furthermore, as an alumna of the California community college system, I not only understand the needs of the student population, I am part of the statistical makeup that defines them.
Santa Rosa Junior College, Accreditation Faculty Co-Chair (2020-2022) – Within this role I have been responsible for providing leadership and guidance in the development of SRJC’s Institutional Self Evaluation Report (ISER). This includes trainings, presentations, and drafting and editing the ISER.
Santa Rosa Junior College, Petaluma Campus Puente Instructor –As the Puente instructor, I teach a year-long, first-year experience set of courses for primarily Hispanic students who are first-generation college students. As part of this program, I organize and facilitate service learning with English-language learners at a local junior high school.
Santa Rosa Junior College, English Department Online Committee – Within this role, I evaluate and schedule new online courses and am part of a team that determines the direction of our online English course offerings.
Santa Rosa Junior College, Community of Practice (CoP) Participation/Leadership – I co-lead a community of practice focusing on online curriculum and navigating the current course management system. I have also been actively involved in CoPs focused on best practices in acceleration, Habits of Mind, Reading Apprenticeship, and the implementation of SB705.
Santa Rosa Junior College, Journalism Advisory Committee member – As part of this advisory committee I work with campus colleagues and community members to determine the direction of the journalism program in conjunction with academic and professional trends.
Santa Rosa Junior College, Accreditation Report (2014-2015) – I worked with college administrators, faculty, and staff within my role as a writer and editor of Santa Rosa Junior College’s response to sanctions regarding the college’s accreditation report.
Yuba College 2012 Accreditation Report (2011-2012) – As the “one-voice” writer and editor of Yuba College’s 2012 Accreditation Report, I worked with committees comprised of faculty, staff, and administrators to create a comprehensive document for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). Through the year-long process of informational meetings, reviewing research materials, and writing and editing drafts of the report, I learned about all aspects of community colleges.
Faculty Co-adviser: The Prospector; Yuba College’s Independent Student NewsSource (Mass Comm/English 20) – I served as an adviser for the staff of The Prospector. The curriculum included concepts and applications for creating and maintaining student news sources – print and online.
