I have been an educator for over 35 years. It seems whatever I've been deeply interested in eventually becomes something I would teach: music, knitting, childbirth, birth psychology, parenting, child development. I came to college teaching after raising my three daughters. While I have an MA in Human Development, I like to say that my three daughters, and now my two granddaughters, have been my greatest teachers. Certainly, as a teacher of child development, this life experience informs my teaching at the deepest level. I also have been very influenced by having spent a significant part of my childhood living in Asia. I bring a strong cross-cultural perspective to everything I do.
Along with teaching, I was for many years the Director of Parents Place, a program of Jewish Family and Children's Services in Santa Rosa. In this capacity I oversaw and provide services through a variety of programs: early childhood mental health consultation to preschools and childcare centers, consultation with parents about their parenting concerns, and parent education through Triple P - Positive Parenting Programs. Before coming to SRJC, I also was a childbirth educator and doula (labor coach) and feel privileged to have attended the births of over 50 children.
Professional Areas of Interest:
I have focused much of my specialized training and study in these areas:
ATTACHMENT (how a child's first relationships set the stage for self-esteem and future relationships).
TEMPERAMENT (how our preferred ways of responding to the world influence behavior).
PRE- AND PERINATAL PSYCHOLOGY (how prenatal and birth experiences affect a child's development and the formation of families).
COMMUNICATION (how the words we use enhance or interfere with our connections with others)
ADOLESCENCE (that exciting and challenging transition between childhood and adulthood).
Presentations and Publications:
QIC Conferences, Santa Rosa Junior College: Handling Anger in Ourselves and Children; Guidance and Discipline with Preschool Children; Partnering With Parents, The Parenting Highway.
Birth Trauma - Origins and Healing: Diablo Valley College, Sonoma State University, Pacific Oaks College.
Childbirth Education for the 21st Century: Sutter Medical Center, Santa Rosa.
Welcome to my homepage. In child development, we talk about the "fit" between caregivers and children. The success of this fit depends on many things: each person's temperament, age, stage of development, life experience, and that hard to define thing called chemistry.
As you choose your pathway of learning at Santa Rosa Junior College, this page and my Section Homepage will give you a sense of who I am, how I approach my work as a teacher, and if choosing me could be a good "fit" for you. Perhaps we'll be meeting soon. I look forward to a chance to support your learning and growth.
